Neuromodulators, such as Botox or Dysport are botulinum toxins. When injected, these stop the communication between the nerves and muscles. This, in turn, stops muscle contractions, making existing wrinkles softer and preventing them from becoming deeper. Neuromodulators are most commonly injected in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes.
-
Neuromodulators typically lasts 3-4 months. It takes about a week to notice the neuromodulator starting to activate, and two weeks post-appointment for final results. Neuromodulators peak at 6 weeks and gradually wears off in 12 weeks.
-
Please refrain from drinking alcohol, taking ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil and Vitamin E one week prior to your appointment.
-
With any injection, there is always a risk of bleeding, bruising and infections. With neuromodulators particularly, there is a risk of ptosis, or upper eyelid drooping. This is temporary, and can be helped, but cannot be completely reversed.
-
After a neuromodulator injection, you may experience some redness, swelling, tenderness, and bruising. To reduce these potential side effects, we apply arnica after the injections. Other potential side effects may include headaches, difficulty swallowing, or muscle stiffness.
-
You should not receive neuromodulator injections if…
-You have a neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateralizing sclerorsis, or myopathies
-You have a history of keloid scarring
-You have allergies to botulinum toxin
-You are pregnant or breast feeding
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions prior to your treatment.
-
After your neuromodulator appointment, you may be slightly red where injections were placed. However, this will wear off quickly.
You should not…
-Exercise 24 hours after injections
-Get a facial massage
-Wear a hat
-Lay down 4-6 hours after your treatment
These restrictions help to prevent the neuromodulator from moving to unintended muscles, which could cause adverse affects.
